Delta Police Command has arrested a student of the Delta State University Abraka (DELSU) for allegedly giving a female co-student a piece of cake laced with Indian-hemp.

The suspect, identified as Bassey Aniekan, was picked up by the police following a report at the Abraka police division by an unidentified concerned student that a certain student allegedly started "behaving abnormally" after eating a piece of cake from the said Bassey Aniakan.

The state police public relations officer (PPRO), Mrs Celestina Kalu, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), confirmed the arrest on Friday.

She said that the suspect allegedly gave a piece of cake to a 17-year old "female student", whose identity the police did not disclose, which the unsuspecting student ate.

The said female student apparently lost control of herself after taking bites of the cake, causing other students present at the private party to panic as the victim reportedly began to exhibit unusual behaviour.

The victim was subsequently rushed to a hospital where she was later admitted while the matter was reported to the police at Abraka at about 9 pm on Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested for giving suspected "poisoned food" to the victim who was still receiving treatment at the hospital.
Nonetheless, the PPRO said that the suspect, Bassey Aniakan, confessed at interrogation by the police to mixing the cake with Canabis (Indian hemp) without the knowledge of the girl.

"The said Bassey Aniakan has been arrested" Mrs Kalu disclosed, adding, "The suspect confessed during interrogation that he added Indian hemp to the ingredients used in baking the said cake."

She noted that the police had commenced investigation into the matter.

In another development, the Delta PPRO said that six suspects have been arrested by the police, also in Abraka, after three men allegedly robbed one Tubosun Elegbeleye of his tricycle at gun point on Thursday night.

During investigation, police reportedly recovered "the snatched tricycle with Registration Number UWN 330 QU as well as one locally made cut-to-size gun and five live cartridges."
